Hamburger Steak and Gravy
Ingredients
1 pound low fat hamburger meat
1 medium white or red onion
1 large egg
¼ cup Panko (bread crumbs)
1 – 2 teaspoons salt (according to your taste)
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon garlic powder
4 Tablespoons vegetable oil (for cooking hamburger)
For Gravy
2 cans low sodium beef broth
1 cup water
4 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
4 (total) Tablespoon vegetable oil (can use remaining oil in skillet from frying hamburger steaks; just add enough to equal 4 Tablespoons for gravy)
Instructions
In large mixing bowl, add hamburger, egg, salt and black pepper, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce & Panko. Mix together well. Divide into 4 equal balls (can use extra large scoop, or kitchen scales to get equal amounts. Mash flat. Peel onion and slice into thin slices. Pre-heat large skillet. Add 4 Tablespoons vegetable oil; heat skillet to medium high heat. Add hamburger steaks. Can use grill press if you want grill marks. Cook each side for about 5 minutes. Add thinly sliced onions after you turn the steaks. Remove from heat and set aside on plate Open beef broth and add to small saucepan, along with water. Heat and leave on burner while your browning your flour/oil for your gravy. Add enough oil to equal the 4 Tablespoons needed to make gravy. Heat the oil and add salt & black pepper; add flour. Using a whisk, constantly stir until flour/oil is light brown. Add hot beef broth/water mixture, stirring constantly with your whisk until it’s smooth. Add hamburger steaks and onions back in your gravy, reduce heat and continue cooking for about 15 minutes. Serve over hot mashed potatoes, warm noodles or rice.
