Apple Crisp

Ingredients

6 cups sliced apples

½ cup granulated sugar

2 Tablespoons salted butter, melted

3 Tablespoons all purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon

Dash nutmeg (optional)

1 Store bought Pillsbury pie crust (or make your own)

Topping:

1 cup rolled oats

¾ cup firmly packed brown sugar

¾ cup all purpose flour

½ cup salted butter, softened

1 teaspoon cinnamon

½ teaspoon salt

 

Instructions

NOTE:  Do this step right before adding pie filling.  For brushing bottom of pie crust: 1 egg plus 1 teaspoon water, beaten together.  Before adding apple filling, brush bottom with egg wash. 

Instruction:

Pre-heat oven to 450 degrees.  Spray bottom and sides of 9” pie dish or oven safe baking dish.  Place pie crust in dish; put a parchment circle down and completely cover with pie weights.  Bake for about 8 minutes. Remove and let pie weights cool.  Remove pie weights.  Reduce oven to 375 degrees.

In saucepan, combine sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg and whisk together.  Add butter and mix; add apple slice and cook for about 8 minutes.  Set off burner and let cool slightly while making topping.  

Topping:

In mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, flour and softened butter; mix with fork, or spatula until combined. Add rolled oats and mix.  Mixture will be slightly crumbly. 

Brush the  bottom of pie crust with egg wash.  Pour apple filling into pie crust.  Sprinkle oat topping evening over apple filling.  Bake for about 20 – 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
