Slow Cooker Apple Butter

Ingredients

5 ½ pounds apples, peeled, cored and finely chopped (crisp apples)

3 ½ cups granulated sugar

½ packed cup brown sugar

3 teaspoons ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground cloves

½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

Place apples in a slow cooker, at least 3 quart cooker.  Combine both sugars, cinnamon, cloves and salt.  Stir until sugar, salt and spices are all combined.  Cover and cook on high for 2 hours, stirring about half way through cooking.

Reduce heat to low setting and cook for 9 – 11 hours or until thickened and dark brown, stirring occasionally.  Note:  You’ll need to stir more often once it starts to thicken.  Uncover and cook an additional hour.  Cool completely and spoon into freezer containers, leaving about ½ inch headspace.
